The flashbacks are woven in perfectly, the sound recording is noticeably sharp, and in general there is very little to complain about this superb rendition of the novel.

The year is 1940; a small provincial town. A schoolgirl in class 9b, Vika Lyuberetskaya, recites poems by the banned poet Sergey Yesenin. Soon, her father is arrested as "an enemy of the people". The girl is then taunted and harassed at school, after which she commits suicide. And ‘tomorrow’ – almost literally – the war starts and most of yesterday’s schoolchildren are to die in its ensuing rampage: one is burned in a tank, one is hanged for participation in the resistance, one becomes an ace pilot. This is a great movie; see it if you have the opportunity. Maybe you’ll learn something you didn’t know about people from the USSR and about this period of history. The film’s soundtrack includes music of the 1930s and works of Antonio Vivaldi.
